Welcome to the 2019 Peterborough Run/Walk to Cure Huntington Disease!

***A message from the Peterborough Chapter:

Hi Folks,

If you had signed up in advance for this year’s Run/Walk for HD, then you should have received a notification that we have decided to postpone this year’s Run/Walk for HD.

This very tough decision was made after reviewing the weather outlook, consulting with staff at HSC’s national office, and speaking to key stakeholders, such as our Kidz Karnival (bouncy castles) and the City of Peterborough.

Kidz Karnival kindly provided us with the option to cancel today with no charge, but indicated that if we waited until tomorrow then we would still be required to pay, even if they could not set up due to weather-related safety concerns. Further, after doing a walk-down of the trail yesterday, it was determined that part of the trail had washed away, creating a safety concerns. We contacted the City, but were advised that they did not have Public Works staff available today to rectify the issue. Finally, having Gord Kidd and Friends (they were the really great band from last year) come down from Haliburton to try and set up and play in such (expected) inclement weather was not something we were comfortable with, and they, rightly, had concerns about their expensive equipment.

Before deciding to postpone the event, Leah was in contact many times with HSC’s national office. We also called several venues to look at moving the post-event festivities to an alternate spot. We contacted the nearby Lawn Bowling Club, The Mount, and the Canadian Canoe Museum; unfortunately, none were available for tomorrow.

In terms of coming up with an alternate plan today, we have come up with a solution that we hope will work for most people, as follows:

  • Leah and I will be at Hamilton Park tomorrow morning, regardless of weather, so that anybody keen on meeting their commitment to run/walk on the allotted day can do so. In this way we will be sure that anybody who did not get the messaging is personally notified. We will do the run tomorrow ourselves as well, with what is obviously expected to be a smaller group. Other facets of the event have been cancelled for tomorrow.
  • We have a tentative re-book date of June 29th – we fully realize this is the long-weekend, and it may not work for some people. We will work with the HSC to offer up refunds to anybody who cannot attend the alternate date, once confirmed, and who does not want to walk or run in the rain.
  • We are meeting tomorrow morning at 11 am with the Lawn Bowling Club and they are tentatively holding the June 29th date for us, and they may have other dates in the next 30 days – we are exploring those options.

It’s obvious now that we should have had a contingency plan in advance, and Leah and I would like to apologize for the inconvenience. Please know that the decision was not an easy one to make, and we hope you will support our efforts to cobble together a “Plan B” that will still enable us to have some family fun and raise money and awareness in support of those of us impacted by HD.

If you have any feedback or questions or concerns, please reach out me or Leah at the contact info below and we hope to see a couple of folks in the morning.

PS - If you can pass this preliminary info on to those who are not on email and/or Facebook, it would be greatly appreciated.
